The Taurus Limited/SHO’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The MKS doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the Taurus FWD with its standard engine gets better highway fuel mileage than the MKS FWD with its standard engine (19 city/29 hwy vs. 19 city/28 hwy).

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Taurus SHO AWD handles at .87 G’s, while the MKS AWD pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Taurus SHO AWD goes through Road & Track’s slalom 2.2 MPH faster than the MKS AWD (64.8 vs. 62.6 MPH).

The Taurus SHO AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.4 seconds quicker than the MKS AWD (26.8 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 28.2 seconds @ .59 average G’s).

Ergonomics Comparison

Standard SYNC AppLink for the Taurus allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, playing internet radio stations, searching the internet, following twitter accounts and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The MKS doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the Taurus owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Taurus will cost $385 to $2445 less than the MKS over a five-year period.

The Taurus will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The Intellichoice estimates that the Taurus will retain 41.48% to 45.91% of its original price after five years, while the MKS only retains 36.39% to 36.52%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Taurus is less expensive to operate than the MKS because typical repairs cost much less on the Taurus than the MKS, including $111 less for a water pump, $12 less for front brake pads, $9 less for a starter, $140 less for a fuel pump, $8 less for front struts and $953 less for a power steering pump.

Intellichoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Ford Taurus will be $9183 to $14223 less than for the Lincoln MKS.

Recommendations Comparison

The Ford Taurus won the Check it Out award in Kiplinger’s 2015 car issue. The Lincoln MKS didn't win any award.

The Ford Taurus outsold the Lincoln MKS by almost seven to one during the 2015 model year.
