Safety Comparison

The Expedition XLT/Limited/King Ranch has standard Reverse Sensing System to help warn the driver about vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles behind or, for the Expedition Limited/King Ranch in front of the vehicle. The Enclave doesn’t offer a front parking aid.

Both the Expedition and the Enclave have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and available all-wheel drive.

The Ford Expedition weighs 627 to 1057 pounds more than the Buick Enclave. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Ford Expedition is safer than the Buick Enclave:

Warranty Comparison

There are over 40 percent more Ford dealers than there are Buick dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Expedition’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

The Ford Expedition’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the Enclave’s engine uses an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

The engine in the Expedition has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engine in the Enclave has dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

The Enclave’s redline is at 6700 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The Expedition has a 5400 RPM redline.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2012 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Buick vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 1 more problems per 100 vehicles, Buick is ranked 9th.

Engine Comparison

The Expedition’s 5.4 SOHC V8 produces 22 more horsepower (310 vs. 288) and 95 lbs.-ft. more torque (365 vs. 270) than the Enclave’s 3.6 DOHC V6.

For more instantaneous acceleration and better engine flexibility in any gear, the Expedition’s engine produces its peak horsepower at lower RPM’s than the Enclave (5100 vs. 6300).

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

The Expedition has 6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Enclave (28 vs. 22 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Expedition has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Enclave doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

For better stopping power the Expedition’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Enclave:

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Expedition has larger standard tires than the Enclave (265/70R17 vs. 255/60R19). The Expedition’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Enclave (275/55R20 vs. 255/60R19).

The Expedition has a standard full size spare tire so your trip isn’t interrupted by a flat. A full size spare isn’t available on the Enclave, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Expedition has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Enclave’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Expedition has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Expedition flat and controlled during cornering. The Enclave’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The Expedition offers an optional automatic rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Enclave doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For greater off-road capability the Expedition has a 1.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Enclave (8.7 vs. 7.6 inches), allowing the Expedition to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Expedition offers optional seating for 9 passengers; the Enclave can only carry up to 8.

The Expedition has 9.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Enclave (160.3 vs. 151.1).

The Expedition has 3 inches more front hip room, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, .4 inches more rear headroom, 2.3 inches more rear legroom, 2.9 inches more rear hip room, 2.4 inches more rear shoulder room, .5 inches more third row headroom, 4.5 inches more third row legroom and 1.9 inches more third row hip room than the Enclave.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Expedition’s optional third row seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Enclave doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The Expedition’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the liftgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Enclave’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Expedition’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge –, which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Enclave does not have an oil pressure gauge.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the exterior keypad. The Enclave doesn’t offer an exterior keypad entry system, and its OnStar ® can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

The Expedition’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Enclave’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The Expedition’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Expedition has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Enclave only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Both the Expedition and the Enclave offer available heated front seats. The Expedition also offers optional heated second row seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated second row seats aren’t available in the Enclave.

Economic Advantages Comparison

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Expedition is less expensive to operate than the Enclave because typical repairs cost much less on the Expedition than the Enclave, including $106 less for a water pump, $385 less for an alternator, $41 less for front brake pads, $107 less for a starter, $222 less for fuel injection, $161 less for a fuel pump, $88 less for front struts, $74 less for a timing belt/chain and $764 less for a power steering pump.
