Safety Comparison

The Edge Limited offers an optional collision warning system, which detects an impending crash through forward mounted sensors and flashes a bright light and sounds a loud, distinctive tone to warn the driver to brake or maneuver immediately to avoid a collision. The system also pre-charges the brakes to begin deceleration more quickly. The Murano doesn't offer a collision warning system.

The Edge offers optional SYNC, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Murano doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Edge and the Murano have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and available all wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Ford Edge is safer than the Nissan Murano:

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS) performs roof strength tests. In that test the Edge earned the top rating of “Good” because its roof supported over four times the Edge’s weight before being crushed five inches. The Murano was rated two rankings lower at “Marginal.”

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Edge is 2% to 4.5% less likely to roll over than the Murano.

For its top level performance in frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the Edge as a “Top Pick” for 2013, a rating only granted to 142 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Murano was not a “Top Pick.”

Warranty Comparison

The Edge comes with free roadside assistance for 5 years 60,000 miles. Ford will send help if you run out of gas, need a jump start, lock your keys in or need any assistance on the road. Nissan doesn’t give free roadside assistance for the Murano.

There are almost 4 times as many Ford dealers as there are Nissan dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Edge’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

The Edge has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Murano doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Edge has a standard 150 amp alternator. The Murano’s 130 amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2012 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Nissan vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 28 more problems per 100 vehicles, Nissan is ranked 18th.

Engine Comparison

The Edge’s optional 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 30 lbs.-ft. more torque (270 vs. 240) than the Murano’s 3.5 DOHC V6. The Edge’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6 produces 25 more horsepower (285 vs. 260) and 13 lbs.-ft. more torque (253 vs. 240) than the Murano’s 3.5 DOHC V6. The Edge Sport’s standard 3.7 DOHC V6 produces 45 more horsepower (305 vs. 260) and 40 lbs.-ft. more torque (280 vs. 240) than the Murano’s 3.5 DOHC V6.

The Edge has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Murano doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Edge Sport’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Murano (265/40R22 vs. 235/65R18).

The Edge Sport’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Murano LE’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Edge Sport has standard 22-inch wheels. The Murano’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Edge has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Murano’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Edge is 2 inches wider in the front and 1.8 inches wider in the rear than on the Murano.

The Edge Sport AWD handles at .82 G’s, while the Murano SL AWD pulls only .76 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Edge Sport AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.5 seconds quicker than the Murano SL (27 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28.5 seconds @ .58 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Edge has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Murano (7.9 vs. 7.3 inches), allowing the Edge to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis Comparison

The Edge is 5.7 inches shorter than the Murano, making the Edge easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Edge offers available electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Murano doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Edge has 3.3 inches more rear legroom and .7 inches more rear hip room than the Murano.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

Ergonomics Comparison

The Edge offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The driver can also remotely turn on the heater or air conditioner. The Murano doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The power windows standard on both the Edge and the Murano have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Edge is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Murano prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the available exterior keypad. The Murano doesn’t offer an exterior keypad entry system.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Edge Limited offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Murano doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Optional SYNC for the Edge allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including playing internet radio stations and other online activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel. The Murano doesn’t offer factory integrated smartphone program access.

Economic Advantages Comparison

Insurance will cost less for the Edge owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Edge will cost $124 to $254 less than the Murano over a five-year period.
